The Evaluation Library

Building the Scientific Foundation for the Future of Culteva™

Scientific data is only as valuable as the methods used to generate it. In horticultural research and cultivar evaluation, consistent methodologies are essential for producing reliable information that can be compared across seasons, locations, organisations and countries.

Culteva™ was founded on this principle. The platform has evolved from more than a decade of applied scientific evaluation undertaken by Provar in collaboration with breeders, researchers, crop specialists and industry experts. Every protocol currently available within Culteva™ has been developed through practical field experience, refined through scientific evaluation, and shaped by industry requirements. This strong scientific foundation has enabled organisations to capture high-quality, standardised data with confidence.

The next stage of this evolution is the Evaluation Library.

Building the Evaluation Library

At its simplest, the Evaluation Library can be thought of as a continually evolving scientific evaluation manual for each crop — encompassing the characteristics, methods and contextual information required to evaluate that crop from the field through harvest, storage, shelf life and sensory assessment. Unlike a conventional manual, however, the Library is not designed primarily as a document to be read from beginning to end. Its knowledge is structured digitally and incorporated into Culteva™, where it becomes the protocols, terminology, data relationships and evaluation tools used during actual evaluation.

For a single crop, the Evaluation Library may therefore bring together multiple dimensions of evaluation, including preharvest development, site and climatic information, genetic information, harvest maturity, fruit quality, sensory characteristics, defects and disorders, storage behaviour and shelf-life performance. Rather than treating these as isolated datasets or separate evaluation processes, the Library provides a common structure through which information collected at different stages of evaluation can be connected and interpreted together.

Rather than replacing the scientific principles already embedded within Culteva™, the Evaluation Library is an ongoing initiative that formalises, expands and documents this accumulated knowledge into a comprehensive scientific framework. It transforms years of practical expertise into a structured, referenced and continuously evolving body of knowledge that supports the continued development of the Culteva™ platform.

Supporting Consistent and Comparable Evaluation Data

The Evaluation Library therefore extends far beyond defining a collection of evaluation protocols. It defines characteristics, measurement methods, terminology, metadata structures, validation rules and relationships between traits, providing a common scientific language for horticultural evaluation. This standardised framework enables consistent interpretation of data while preserving the flexibility required across different crops, production systems and evaluation objectives.

As the project progresses, the Evaluation Library will provide the structure needed to simplify the development of new crop protocols, improve consistency between evaluations, and support more sophisticated data collection, reporting and analysis within Culteva™. It will also provide a transparent scientific reference that can be continuously refined through collaboration between researchers, industry specialists, clients and software developers.

A Scientific Resource That Continues to Evolve

An important component of the project is the planned Evaluation Library Portal, which will enable collaborative development and maintenance of the Library. Through this portal, scientific experts and industry partners will be able to contribute to the ongoing refinement and development of new evaluation methodologies, ensuring that protocols continue to evolve alongside advances in horticultural science and industry practice. The Library is therefore designed to remain dynamic rather than fixed, allowing evaluation methods to be refined or expanded as technologies, scientific understanding and industry requirements evolve, including in response to specific client needs.

The Evaluation Library Project also establishes the structural framework required for future innovation. By standardising how evaluation information is defined and related, data collected across different stages of evaluation, seasons, sites and production contexts can increasingly be linked and analysed together. This creates opportunities for long-term analysis, the development of evaluation indices and the investigation of relationships between factors such as genetics, climate, site, preharvest performance, postharvest behaviour and sensory characteristics. Standardising this underlying scientific architecture also creates the foundation for advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, automated protocol development, multilingual support and ultimately broader collaboration through future Evaluation Network initiatives.

Future Opportunities for Evaluation and Analysis

From a strategic perspective, the Evaluation Library creates a growing knowledge asset for Culteva that extends beyond software functionality alone. Its value lies not only in supporting consistent evaluation, but in allowing scientific knowledge, evaluation methods and accumulated data to be progressively reused, expanded and connected across crops, clients and applications. As the Library develops, it strengthens Culteva’s ability to respond to emerging industry and client needs, accelerate the development and adaptation of protocols, and deliver increasingly sophisticated evaluation and analytical capabilities. In this way, the scientific depth and practical value of the platform can continue to grow alongside the Library itself.

Importantly, the Evaluation Library is an actively and continuously evolving resource. While Culteva™ already operates on scientifically developed protocols derived from this accumulated evaluation knowledge, the broader Evaluation Library is progressively formalising, referencing, expanding and connecting this knowledge into a comprehensive framework that can continuously inform the development of the platform. This distinction reflects both the maturity of Culteva™’s existing scientific foundation and the significant opportunity that lies ahead.

The long-term vision is ambitious: to create a living, globally recognised repository of horticultural evaluation knowledge that enables consistent, transparent and scientifically rigorous data collection across the agricultural industry. By combining scientific excellence with modern digital technology, the Evaluation Library will help transform individual observations into shared knowledge, comparable datasets and better-informed decisions.

In doing so, the Evaluation Library represents more than documentation—it provides the scientific architecture that will enable CultevaTM to continue evolving as a trusted platform for cultivar evaluation, research collaboration and data-driven innovation.
